Four Tricks to Adapt And Thrive As A Leader In Any Situation — No Practice Needed

There’s this unique opportunity right in front of us that most people miss… Do you?

Earlier this week, I was meditating on a fascinating idea from a conversation with Patrick Donohoe, author of Heads I Win, Tails You Lose.

We discussed the four archetypes present in people and how we switch between them (personalities) based on our environment. The four archetypes are the warrior, the magician, the lover, and the king.

I wanted to understand each archetype better because each one represents a piece of our personalities. The goal is to balance the four archetypes and never let one become too strong.

First, the warrior is that part of your personality that solves problems, overcomes obstacles, and fights back when life throws its “jabs.” If we stay in the warrior archetype for too long, we’re continually trying to solve problems, devote our time to work, and mission at the expense of things like the people we love.

Number two is the lover. The lover is that part of your personality that drops its guard and comes out when you express love towards your meaningful relationships.

If you spent all of your time expressing “the lover,” you would be neglecting your purpose, and you wouldn’t be showing the parts of your personality that make you fun.

The magician is that side of your personality where you joke, have fun and let loose. Imagine a time when you laughed until your sides hurt; the magician was in control.

Four is the king (your inner-ruler). To grasp the concept of the king, meditate on the qualities that make-up a noble leader. Patrick had a great point when he said to think of figures such as King Arthur or Jon Snow from Game of Thrones.

Reflecting on my past, I had a difficult time balancing the warrior, specifically. That meant I was so obsessed with my mission that I neglected personal relationships (the lover) and having fun (the magician). My inner-king lost control, and my life was out of balance.

That made me feel sick, drained, and anxious.

Then my wife had a dear friend pass away, and I realized that every day isn’t guaranteed. I felt guilty and wanted to give up because I gave up precious time with my family for work.

Then I developed a heart condition in the Army, and my life transformed.

Suddenly, I was able to tame the warrior within and balance it with the other three archetypes.

So I decided to move to Hawaii with my wife to slow down and develop myself.

However, we had a BIG problem…

We still had to deal with the reality that we were broke trying to live in one of the most expensive places on the planet.

In the end, we learned to summon each of our archetypes and get them on the same page out of sheer survival.

That allowed us to conquer a move to Hawaii with no work, no car, no home, and no money.

Which meant we could now build a solid foundation and tame the challenges of Hawaii.

In the end, we were able to move to a luxury community (our dream spot) on the west side of Oahu.

When all is said and done, I used the king to lead the magician, the lover, and the warrior to work as a team to accomplish our goals.

And in the end, all of this means I have become closer to my family and have more time freedom to live life at full throttle and savor being alive.

The most vital lesson from this story is that being aware of “The King” in you allows you to lead the magician, the lover, and the warrior to get what you want from life.

So what this means to you is that you developing yourself means developing these four archetypes. For the sake of your happiness, fulfillment, and freedom, it’s crucial to develop these parts of your personality.
