Did you know that goals expire like milk? If you’re not setting goals in the right way, you’re leaving money, time, and success on the table.

When I began my journey towards success, I set goals and had New Year’s resolutions.

I thought by setting resolutions; I could use willpower to get what I wanted.

But life always seemed to take over; my goals would vanish into thin air until the following year when I would make another resolution.

It made me feel irritated because it seemed like new years resolutions and goals never worked!

I wanted to believe in goals, but I had never seen anyone that knew how to teach them in a way that got me results.

That is until I learned something unique…

Goals don’t work without plans.

Up until that point, I was setting goals, thinking that’s all I needed to do. But, I was not achieving results because I never set plans to achieve the goals.

So I started creating plans for my goals, and life changed forever!

Except now, I had a new issue…

I had no idea where to begin. What if I don’t like the goal I set? Is it OK to quit? How do I know I created a goal the right way?

So, I began studying goals and plans in extreme detail. What you’re about to learn is a proven system to get what you want from life.

Important: To get what you want, you need to combine goals with plans. Goals are the airport (where you want to “land the plane”). Plans are how you’ll get to the airport (the compass).

Setting Goals (The Right Way)

1. The time of day that you set your goals affects their success. Always create your goals when you’re in an elevated mood (peak state). What frame of mind are you in when you try to set your goals? Don’t set goals if you are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired (H.A.L.T).

2. Flexibility is vital. There’s a common belief that you need to grind to get results. Our society praises the people who grind for 15 hours a day to achieve success. However, it’s perfectly OK to let a goal go if you’re not inspired by it, or it no longer serves you. Success does require you to pick something and stick with it, but it doesn’t need to be something that makes you feel terrible every day.

3. Do periodic reviews of your goals. The morning is the supreme time to check-in with yourself and your inspiration for your goals. Mornings are also the simplest time to set goals because you can put yourself into an elevated state with less effort.

4. Reward yourself. Positive experiences are a reward you can give yourself whenever you choose. Don’t neglect now. When you reward yourself with an experience, you give yourself the gift of new ideas, resources, and abilities.

Setting Plans (The Right Way)

1. You only need to decide your next step. Too often, we make the mistake of writing out the entire plan down to every detail. Writing out a complete plan is stressful, and life rarely follows suit.

2. Anticipate the obstacles you might face. Think about the challenges you face internally (within your control) and externally (out of your control). What habits, fears, experiences, or skills can derail your progress?

3. Keep a pulse on your plan. Be ready for your plans to change. Be fluid, like a river, and center yourself every morning so you can adapt to changes.

· Don’t put off everything until a day when you feel like you have the money, time, health, or relationships you desire. That day may never come.

· Consider how you can reward yourself now. What have you told yourself you’ll do after you get achieve your goal? Don’t wait. Do what you want now because “now” has tremendous promise.

· Remember: Plans are how you’ll get to your destination; your goals are the destination.
